Glossary
Two kinds of word turn up in Hafrix: the ones the oilfield already had, and the ones the product invented. This page defines both, once, so that no other page has to.
Where: Help Center (/help) → Reference, or Search the manual in the help panel; other pages link here for a word they do not explain again. Nothing on this page is a setting — it explains words, it does not change anything, and everyone sees the same page.
How to read this page
Two tables, and they answer different questions.
- Industry terms — words the yard brought with it. Hafrix does not redefine them: BHA is BHA on the rig floor in every language, and that is what the screens say. If a word here confuses you, the fix is a colleague, not a setting.
- Hafrix terms — words that mean nothing outside this product. Readiness, section grant, life budget and the rest are ours; each row says what it means in one sentence and points at the page where it lives.
Note
Names of things your company typed in — categories, locations, attribute labels such as Size or Max pressure, item names, well and rig references — are shown exactly as your yard entered them, whatever language that is.
Industry terms
Hardware in the yard
These are names of tools, and they appear as item names, category names and free text. Hafrix stores them; it does not interpret them.
| Term | What it is | Where you meet it |
|---|---|---|
| BHA | Bottom-hole assembly — the tools made up below the drill pipe for one run | Days in BHA, Serial → BHA cell in the Aramco field history (Connectors) |
| string | Everything made up in the hole for one run, taken together | Log usage writes the same hours and runs to a whole string (Items) |
| joint | One length of pipe as it is racked and handled | Free text — item names and notes |
| sub | A short connector between two tools: bit sub, float sub, rotary sub, shock sub, X-over sub | Item names in the fleet |
| jar | A tool that delivers an impact up or down the string; a fishing jar frees stuck pipe | Item names; the Fishing Tools kind of category |
| stabilizer | A bladed sub that centres the string in the hole | Item names |
| mud motor | Downhole motor driven by mud flow; its power section is the rotor and stator pair | Item names; assembly categories whose attributes are Lobes, Stages, Housing, Bend |
| NMDC | Non-magnetic drill collar — carries survey tools clear of magnetic steel | Item names |
| MWD | Measurement while drilling — the survey and telemetry package | Item names, crew roles, register categories |
| BOP | Blowout preventer | Item names |
| overshot, junk basket | Fishing tools: one grips what was lost, the other collects debris | Item names |
| elevator, elevator links | The bail and latch that carry pipe or casing | Item names; the usual subject of a lifting certificate in Compliance |
| wireline, slickline, coiled tubing | Intervention methods, and the units that run them | Item names, job names |
| tally | The measured, counted list of what went in the hole | Free text — Hafrix has no tally field of its own |
| make-up torque | The torque a connection is tightened to | An attribute a category can define; torque is one of the measured quantities Hafrix converts (ftlb, inlb, Nm, kNm) |
The well and the day
| Term | What it is | Where you meet it |
|---|---|---|
| rig | The drilling or workover unit the equipment goes out to | Rig on a job, a field ticket and an assignment; a kind of location; On rig in Utilization |
| well | The hole being drilled or worked over | Well on a job and a field ticket |
| yard | Your base: where equipment lives when it is not out | A kind of location; In yard in Utilization |
| workshop | Where repairs happen — yours or somebody else's | A kind of location, and the Workshop on a work order (Maintenance) |
| run | One trip of a tool into the well and back | Runs in usage and in life budgets; Ready to run in readiness |
| trip | A single in-and-out of the hole, as the rig counts it | Aramco field history — a ticket day can be reversed — day covered by an Aramco trip |
| standby | A day the unit sits on the rig without working: billed as a day, costing no running hours | Standby rate and Standby factor (Finance); the Rate basis of a field ticket line |
| mobilize | Send reserved equipment out to the rig | Mobilize on a job (Jobs); Mobilization also appears as a billed service line |
| rig up / rig down | Making the equipment ready on site and breaking it down again | Free text — a service line on an invoice |
| company man | The client's representative on site, who signs for the day | Typed into Position under Signed by on a field ticket (Field tickets) |
| gate pass | The paper that lets a load through the gate, out to the rig and back | Gate pass — out to the rig on a job |
Identifiers, sizes and units
| Term | What it is | Where you meet it |
|---|---|---|
| S/N | Serial number — your yard's identity for one unit; unique across the fleet | Serial no. on an item, Serial in lists |
| P/N | Part number — the maker's number for a part, which many units can share | Part no. on an item and on a stock card |
| Mfg. no. | The number stamped by the manufacturer, which is not your yard serial | Manufacturer's number on an item |
| Asset ID | The number the unit carries in the fixed-asset register, e.g. FAOWN-00271 |
Asset ID; matched against the register in Register audit |
| OD / ID | Outside and inside diameter | Attribute labels a category defines for itself, alongside Size, Length, Max pressure, Connection, Grade |
| inch fractions | Field notation for sizes: 5 1/2", 6-3/4, 30' 5 3/4" |
Accepted as typed in measured attributes, and converted for sorting and filtering |
| RPM | Revolutions per minute — how fast the drill string is turning | RPM on the usage form, on the phone and in the office |
| KREV | Thousands of cartridge revolutions: hours multiplied by RPM and the tool's gear ratio. What a cutter set is really worn out by — an hour at 60 RPM is not an hour at 120 | Life budgets, service plans, Remaining life; recorded on every usage entry that has RPM behind it |
| gear ratio | How much faster the cartridge turns than the string it rides on — 1 on a concentric tool | An attribute of the tool; the server uses it to work out KREV |
| psi, ftlb, bbl, gpm | Field units for pressure, torque, volume and flow | Units a measured attribute can carry; Hafrix converts between them and keeps what you typed |
| PO | The client's purchase order the work is billed against | PO no. on an item and on stock; Client PO on an invoice (Invoices) |
| TCO | Total cost of ownership — everything one unit has cost you | TCO on the item money card and in Finance |
| ROI | Return on investment — what a unit earned against what it cost | ROI in Finance |
| Aramco, Sage | Outside systems Hafrix reads: the client's field history, and the accounting register | Connectors and Register audit |
Hafrix terms
Words the product coined. Outside Hafrix they mean nothing, or something else.
The fleet
| Term | In one sentence | Lives in |
|---|---|---|
| item | The umbrella word for anything in the fleet — every asset and every consumable is an item | Items |
| asset | One physical, serialized unit with its own location, timeline, certificates and book value | Items, Item card |
| consumable | A stock card rather than a unit: quantities per location, no individual history | Items, Stock |
| class | Whether an item is an Asset or a Consumable — chosen once, at creation | Items |
| role | What the item is to the business — Capital equipment, Spare & tooling, Consumed material or Goods for sale — a filter, never a permission; Goods for sale is the one role that cannot be booked onto a job | Items |
| category | The catalogue node an item belongs to, which also decides its attribute schema, its depreciation policy and its post-use inspection | Catalogues in Settings |
| attribute schema | The specification fields a category defines for its items, each with a type and a default unit | Catalogues in Settings |
| container | An item that other items live inside — a kit box, a basket; its Contents move with it | Item card |
| assembly | A category whose items are built from parts: they are filled with Install rather than Move, and every part records the period it stood there | Catalogues in Settings |
| readiness | The computed answer to "can this go out?" — Ready, Need inspection or Need repair — as opposed to the status a person declared | Items |
| life budget | The hours, runs, KREV or calendar months a category's units are expected to last, with a warn percentage that raises an alert before the budget is spent | Catalogues in Settings |
| component | A serialized part fitted into an assembly for a period — from the day it went in to the day it came off, with the hours and KREV it earned there | Items, Item card |
| slot | A named seat of an assembly with a capacity, e.g. four cutter cassettes on a reamer body | Catalogues in Settings |
| certificate type | A named kind of paper with a default validity, so the same inspection means the same thing on every unit | Compliance |
| inspection after use | The certificate type a category owes after every run: usage logged after the last such certificate flips the unit to Need inspection | Compliance |
Work and the field
| Term | In one sentence | Lives in |
|---|---|---|
| job | One piece of client work — a client, a well, a rig and a period — that equipment is booked onto | Jobs |
| booking | A reservation of one asset on one job for a period, before it physically leaves | Jobs, Dispatch board |
| assignment | The record that an asset is out with a client — either on a job, or ad hoc with just a client and a rig | Item card, Jobs |
| field ticket | The primary document a crew fills in for one shift: what ran, for how long, signed by the client | Field tickets |
| shift type | The named span a ticket covers — day, night, full day | Catalogues in Settings |
| crew role | The named job a person on the ticket did, which is what labour is priced by | Catalogues in Settings |
| work order | One repair on one unit: what was done, what it cost you, and who pays for it | Maintenance |
| service level | The named grade of repair a price book charges for — minor repair, major rebuild, inspection and test | Catalogues in Settings |
| field app | The phone-sized Hafrix that crews use on site, which keeps working without a signal | Field app |
| alert | A finding of the nightly rules — an expired certificate, a spent life budget, an idle asset — that stays in a queue until someone acknowledges it | Alerts & notifications |
| notification | A line in the bell for something that happened without you, as opposed to a toast confirming what you just did | Alerts & notifications |
| announcement | A message written by a person — your admin or the Hafrix team — for everyone to read | Alerts & notifications |
Money
| Term | In one sentence | Lives in |
|---|---|---|
| price book | A dated table of what you charge, which the closest matching row wins: rental rates, labour rates and maintenance rates | Finance |
| rental rate (on an item) | What you pay a vendor for a unit you rent in — a cost, not a price | Item card |
| list rate (on the money card) | The fallback price for one unit, used only when no price book row covers it | Finance |
| minimum charge | The floor for a single billed line, so a two-hour call-out is never billed as two hours | Finance |
| standby factor | The share of the day rate a standby day is charged at, when no explicit standby rate is set | Finance |
| invoice line source | The primary document standing behind an invoice line — a field ticket line, or a work order | Invoices |
| Priced by | The column that says which book set the rate on a line: Rental price book, Labour price book, Repair price book, Quote, Item card or By hand | Invoices |
| impairment | Value lost for good — dropped in the hole, damaged beyond repair — posted as its own line rather than as depreciation | Finance |
| register audit | The reconciliation of your fixed-asset register against the fleet Hafrix knows, row by row, with a decision on each finding | Register audit |
People and access
| Term | In one sentence | Lives in |
|---|---|---|
| tenant | One customer company as the platform sees it — its own data, its own users, invisible to every other tenant | Platform console |
| workspace | The same company as you see it: the name in your capsule, the logo on your printed forms, the thing you switch between if you belong to more than one | Account |
| membership | A person's place in one workspace, carrying their role there — the same person can be an admin in one workspace and a viewer in another | Roles & access |
| role (of a person) | How deeply someone may change data: Viewer, Operator, Manager, Admin, each one adding to the last | Roles & access |
| section | One page of the application treated as an object of access — Items, Jobs, Finance, Invoices and the rest | Roles & access |
| section grant | The tick that hands a section to a group: a section is open to everyone until one group is granted it, and from then on only that group sees it — admins included | Catalogues in Settings |
| group | A named set of people that section grants are handed to | Catalogues in Settings |
| platform administrator | A member of the Hafrix team, not of your company: they work in the platform console, never inside a workspace, and every support lookup they make is logged | Platform console |
| platform console | The separate /platform area where the Hafrix team, not your company, manages tenants, signup links and this documentation |
Platform console |
Words that look alike
The pairs that cost the most time when they are mixed up.
| These two | Are not the same |
|---|---|
| status and readiness | Status is declared by a person; readiness is computed from certificates, inspections and life budgets. An Active item is not Ready while a certificate has expired. |
| job and work order | A job is client work that equipment is booked onto. A work order is a repair of one unit. The Jobs page calls jobs client work orders in its subtitle — that is prose, not the term. |
| assignment and booking | A booking reserves an asset for a period; an assignment is the asset actually being out with the client. Mobilize turns the first into the second. |
| container and assembly | A container holds items that are still their own units, and shows Contents. An assembly is built from parts and shows Components. |
| rental rate and list rate | The rental rate on an item is what you pay to rent it in. The list rate on the money card is what you charge when no price book covers the unit. |
| invoice line source and Priced by | The source is the paper behind the line — a ticket line or a work order. Priced by is the book the rate came from. |
| tenant and workspace | The same company, two vocabularies: tenant is the platform's word, workspace is yours. |
| class and role | Class is how an item is accounted for (asset or consumable); role is what it is to the business (capital, spare, material). |

FAQ
Why is BHA not spelled out? — Because it is not an abbreviation to a driller, it is the name of the thing. The same goes for TCO, P/N and the tool names above: the oilfield says them in English in every language.
Why is the well and rig I typed still in my own language? — Anything your company entered is data, not interface. Categories, locations, attribute labels, item names, well and rig references are shown exactly as typed.
A word on my screen is not on this page. — Then it is probably an interface word with an ordinary meaning. If it is a term you had to guess at, say so — the page it belongs to should define it, and this one should list it.
Which word do I use when I write to support? — The one printed on the screen, in English if you can. Every term in the second table is the product's own, and the English form is the one that identifies it without ambiguity.
